Taking a moment for Ping Pong Girls
This past Saturday I was at a birthday party, where I had the misfortune to bear witness to conversational dribble on a most terrible topic. I didn’t really know a lot of people at this gathering, and was making my best attempt to mingle when I found myself amidst a few friends chatting about their recent travels and associated misdemeanors – all of whom had made recent trips to Thailand. Every third Wednesday of the month is a special evening for chili lovers in the Kensington area! Calgary Church, along with King's Bridge and the The House Coffee Sanctuary, host Kensington Community Suppers at the Hillhurst Community Center (1320, 5 Ave, NW).
What's the catch? Usually there is no catch. In fact, we are unashamedly committed to no catch chili. However, this time there's a catch. At our event this Wednesday (beginning at 6PM) we are going to collect donations on behalf of World Vision to help the relief efforts in Haiti. Everything you donate during the evening will be sent to World Vision AND will be doubled by the Canadian government.
Here's a great chance to get FREE chili and help an entire nation in need.
You don't have to live in Kensington, Sunnyside, or Hillhurst to stop by. If you're in the area shopping or passing by on the way home, you're welcome to take part.

You don't have to live in Kensington, Sunnyside, or Hillhurst to stop by. If you're in the area shopping, at Riley Park hanging, or pass by along the way home, you're more than welcome to take part.
It's cool to not drive home, park in your garage and watch TV all night. If you're looking for a way to connect with those who live around you then do it with free chili! A bunch of groups have combined to put together 'Community Meals' for the Kensington area. If you live in Kensington, Sunnyside, or Hillhurst, or are just passing through, then come visit Wednesday, August 19th, 2009, and then every third Wednesday of the mont for a chance to meet neighbours in your community.
No strings attached, but hey, if you can make chili and bring it bonus!
The street will close down for one Sunday this year in August (the 23rd). A committee has in fact been put together called 'The Bow River Flow'. There will be a few events taking place along the roadway, as well as a bike race passing through. If you're driving you'll have to detour into downtown and come out.
It should be an interesting time for folks to get out and have a chance to stroll Kensington, which is not going to be closed down (road ways.)
I'll head down and check it out since we're there quite often.
I'm curious to know what the interest level would be for such a group. I won't write much about it, instead, take a look at this video. Comment or email back with your thoughts and interest. Thanks!
When their first lease ran out they came under heavy scrutiny from their new community. The wrong zoning was the reason for their eviction. Their new location was zoned properly and should have been the new home for Second Chance Recovery.
Not so fast.
A victory was won for the community of Braeside. They successfully prevented the emergence of a recovery clinic in their community. But how can this really be hailed as a victory? In fact, I think this is a disturbing and sad day for our city since we failed again at engaging in a social injustice.

Canadians Heartless Armchair Critics Uninterested in Social Justice?
If you could, would you not extend a helping hand to the single moms, the homeless, the hungry, the unstable, choosing life over death?
When given the choice between life and death, Canadians seem to be overwhelming in favour of blowing somebody up. When given the choice of spending 1 million tax payer dollars versus saving the life of a Canadian, we seem to opt for the million.
Although these examples are a bit crass and perhaps an inaccurate reflection of every Canadian, I have noticed a disturbing trend lately reading Canadian comments on news stories that are in anyway remotely connected to terrorism or situations that involve Canadians being victimized. Regardless of what's happening around the world, the solution 90% of the time is: kill more people, blow something up that's bigger, abandon, and ensure big problems far away from home stay far, far away.
Call it a generational thing, call it a reflection of our desensitized society, call it what you want because it really doesn't matter. My observation is when it comes to the inequality we see across the globe there is no equality for humanity. If you commit an injustice that hits the news then apparently you deserve to die.
There's something very wrong with the direction of our Canadian culture and it's disgusting to watch it unfold. Still don't know what I'm talking about? Here are some examples about what I mean. Continue reading »
I tried to get tickets but I was 10 minutes too late way back when. Plus, I don't want to line the pockets of scalpers (or regular people who bought 8 tickets to resell....shame.) But alas, it's gonna be a rad show, and it's fun to head to concerts.
Concerts are like church (the evangelical type). There they try to make you feel a certain way, a spiritual experience if you will. Key changes, arms raised, closed eyes, etc. The only difference is church does it poorly and coldplay will rock the house.
The band was in Calgary a day early, post your sightings here. We've heard everything from the soccer center and downtown venues......
